Time of Conceiving of Children

Conception on the days 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 from the date of menstruation of the female generally results in the birth of a male child. The lagna of birth will correspond to the Moon at the time of conception and the lagna of the time of conception will be the position of the Moon at the time of birth.

Astrologically compatible partners beget good children. Our sastras recommend proper time for conception. Facts gathered from various sources (books and hearsay) are presented here, for the benefit of the EST readers.

Effects of conception during unsuitable time:

Amavasya and Prathami
- Physically or mentally under-developed child.
Ashtami and Navami
- arrogant and intolerant child.
Chandrashtama Days
- Child suffering from health problems and loss of memory.
Suitable time for conception:

» Days with good Taraphal and Panchakaphal are preferred.
» Strength of the Moon is essential. Birth-Tithi of the woman is conducive.
» The lagna of birth will correspond to the Moon at the time of conception and the lagna of the time of conception will be the position of the Moon at the time of birth. Thus one can delineate the positions of the lagna and Moon of the child to be born, with some degree of accuracy from the time of conception. Benefics like Jupiter, Mercury or Venus in the conception lagna or with the transiting Moon, or in the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, or 10th from the Moon are good placements. If the transit Moon is in a Fixed sign, the child will be born after 292 days, in a Cardinal sign after 287 days and in a Dual sign after 276 or 281 days, in the case of proper births.
» Favourable asterisms are Rohini, Uttraphalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Sravana, Satabisha, Uttarabhadrapada and Revati, but subject to Taraphal.
» All Tithes except the 4th, 8th, 9th, 14th, Amavasya and Prathami are good.
» The Janma star, the 10th star and the 19th star from the birth star must be avoided.
» Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra and Pisces are good lagnas.

Swara Sastra, the rhythm of breath
At a particular time, usually one nostril remains well open and the other a little blocked. After some time, the process gets reversed. Conception, when the male's right nostril is open, results in the birth of a male child; the male's left nostril remaining open results in the birth of a female child.

By lying to the left side for some time and blocking the left nostril with finger or cloth, the male can induce breathing through the right nostril, which can finally result in the birth of a male child.

Suitable time of conception for women
The first 16 days from the date of menstruation are termed as Ritu. The first 4 nights are not fit for impregnation. Conception on the days 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 from the date of menstruation of the female generally results in the birth of a male child; on the other hand conception on odd days like 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 and 15 results in the birth of a female child.

Going into the minute details, on the 5th night, if conception takes place, one gets a girl; on the 6th night a son, a founder of a family; 7th night a barren female; 8th night a son who may not beget children, 9th night a barren female, 10th night a wealthy son; 11th night a deformed female; 12th night a fortunate son; 13th night a sinful female; 14th night a virtuous son; 15th night a fortunate female; and on the 16th night a wise son. It is said that from the 18th night to the next menses, the chances for impregnation are less. It is said that married women may conceive quickly, if they wear thick silver rings on their second fingers of the left toe and right toe.
